Beyond You or Me

Being transported into a state of other worldliness, or finding the Divine in everyday situations is an ultimate state of grace that draws us out of our mundane existence and for a moment in time we are lifted to another realm.  The Virtue of Transcendence is rare and magnificent to behold.  Yet it is not out of our reach.

Transcendence ‘describes strengths that help you connect to the larger universe and provide meaning’,  VIA Institute on Character.  The five strengths grouped under this category of spiritual well-being are: Appreciation of Beauty & Excellence, Gratitude, Hope, Humor, and Spirituality.  These are earthly, attainable strengths we can readily cultivate.

1. Appreciation of Beauty & Excellence:

A poet’s rapture, a marathoner’s ecstasy, a graduating class giving a standing ovation to the class valedictorian are glimpses of recognizing the splendor and brilliance of nature, person, or situation.  We go outside of ourselves to experience, notice and celebrate something bigger than us or our universe.

This strength invites us to
– appreciate physical beauty: awe struck by the grandeur of rock formations in a national park
– recognize skill and talent: admiring valid contributions of a colleague worthy of a promotion
– uphold moral beauty: cheering a student speaking his truth in the principal’s office

We can grow this ability to value that which is unique “to notice the exceptional in everyday life”.  It requires us to step out of our sphere of self-absorption. In return, it has the delightful effect of making all our senses come alive and our own lives happier, healthier and richer.

2. Gratitude:

We turn our gaze outwards to acknowledge our thankfulness to another for a kind gesture, thoughtful gift, or caring act.  We feel and express our appreciation to the universe for its benevolence.  Whether you thank a stranger for holding the door open for you, or your manager for valuing your service with a year-end bonus, the magnitude of the original gesture matters little.  It is far removed from common expectation and social convention.

It represents
– the genuineness of your response
– the humility you develop
– the humanity you feel towards the benefactor
– counting your blessings

Benefits of gratitude are both subtle and expansive.  It is related to better cardio vascular health, more robust immune system, greater happiness and a meaningful life.  Grateful people engage in a wide range of behaviors, sleep better at night, are high achievers, optimistic and view their work as a calling.  They truly value the contributions of others and express it readily.

When the recipient of your gratitude feels joy, the mirror neurons in your brain reflect this and your own sense of contentment is multiplied.  A positive feedback loop is generated.

See how it feels to appreciate beauty and excellence and to express gratitude to others however small and insignificant their actions.  Try these strengths on for size.  Notice the warm glow that spreads all over you. You deserve it!
